This four-bedroom villa in Weligama was built in 2017 from scratch, architecturally inspired by stately Walawwa homes and restyled into a design-led modern villa. For groups of up to eight, it offers the utmost comfort – hand-made beds, 21st century furnishings, hand-picked antiques, high-quality linens and thoughtful Sri Lankan infusions – all within a highly styled setting that’s been consciously conceived by owner Dee Gibson, a British-Sri Lankan interior designer.
The villa sits in large landscaped gardens home to resident wildlife such as langur monkeys, peacocks and endemic birds, mongoose and monitor lizards, which can be spied from beside the pool and bedroom balconies. The pool is 15 metres long, and flanked by loungers. The villa has a permanent team of five staff including chef, housekeeper and manager to help guests explore and engage with the local area.
Weligama is a southern surfing hotspot. Many key local breaks can be accessed within a few minutes’ tuk tuk ride from the villa and the closest beach (Turtle Beach) is just three minutes walk away. This is a popular place for year-round surf (including lessons) and stand up paddle boarding. A beach bar overlooks the cove though many other dining options are found in Weligama and Mirissa.
Other experiences include Sri Lankan cookery classes, private yoga classes, tours of white tea and cinnamon estates and bike rides around paddy fields, Galle Fort’s historic buildings, shops and boutiques are a 30-minute tuk tuk away or jump on local train and experience a charming rail ride. All guests are able to plan bespoke itineraries and special occasions with the owner very easily upon request.
In 2023, Dee extended the property by adding HERA’s Garden, a large new shala set in a garden of mango, guava, peppercorns, chillies and scented flowers, dedicated to wellness retreats and events. The shala is a tall and airy space, acoustically perfect for chanting, gong baths and tea ceremonies, and achingly romantic for special occasions. This new shala can be booked with the villa upon request.
